Middlesex Hospital to open specialty pharmacy at Middletown cancer center

MIDDLETOWN — As some pharmacies shutter across Connecticut, Middlesex Health is partnering with a Boston-based pharmacy services company to open the health system’s first specialty pharmacy. Middlesex Hospital and Clearway Health have created Middlesex Hospital Specialty Pharmacy on the lower level of Middlesex Health Cancer Center at 536 Saybrook Road in Middletown. The retail pharmacy opens Oct. 1, with hours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The pharmacy, aimed at reducing patient costs, will be available to anyone throughout Middlesex County and the shoreline, not just Middlesex Hospital patients, according to a news release.
“Managing complex or chronic health conditions can be overwhelming, and many patients face challenges when accessing the medications they need,” said Vincent G. Capece Jr., president and CEO of Middlesex Health, in a news release. “This new specialty pharmacy will reduce financial burden and improve the patient experience."
While the hospital already offers inpatient pharmacy services, the new retail pharmacy will offer specialized medication education, clinical support, medication adherence support, refill reminders, affordable prescriptions with prior authorization, co-pay assistance and home delivery services, according to the news release.
Nicole Faucher, president of Clearway Health, said the specialty pharmacy’s program is designed to identify patients prescribed complex, special medication therapies. The program aims to discern the barriers patients may have to getting those medications and then streamline delivering them.
In addition, the hospital hopes the new 1,800-square-foot-plus pharmacy can aid Middlesex Hospital patients who may be affected by the recent closing of retail pharmacies in the area, including the Walgreens pharmacy at 311 E Main St. in Middletown that closed in April.
