Lurie Children’s, in collaboration with Clearway Health, has announced plans to establish its first outpatient speciality pharmacy, aiming to enhance access to specialised medications and clinical support for paediatric patients.
The facility is expected to open in late 2026 and will be situated within the new Lurie Children’s Outpatient and Infusion Center in Schaumburg, Illinois, US.
The pharmacy, spanning 2,050ft² on the third floor, is designed to cater to children with complex medical conditions that require speciality medications not typically found in retail pharmacies.
By integrating this service, Lurie Children’s intends to streamline the care journey for patients and their families, reducing the burden of managing long-term care and addressing the fragmentation of services.
Lurie Children’s president and CEO Tom Shanley said: “Building a speciality pharmacy in partnership with Clearway Health simplifies what can often be a complex, costly, and time-consuming process for patients and their families who already face a challenging time, and ensures they receive their medications on time and with the right support and care needed along the way.”
The speciality pharmacy will feature patient liaisons working with Lurie Children’s clinical teams across various practices, including pulmonary, cystic fibrosis, rheumatology, neurology, infectious disease, haematology, oncology, and genetics.
The staff will offer customised education and support, coordinate medication management programmes, and strive to improve clinical outcomes while lessening medication costs.
In addition, the speciality pharmacy will provide Lurie Children’s healthcare providers and clinical teams with administrative support, managing tasks such as investigating health plan advantages, prior authorisations, and financial assistance programmes.
This support aims to alleviate the administrative burden on clinical staff, allowing them to focus more on patient care.
The establishment of the pharmacy is also seen as a strategic move to ensure sustainable growth and long-term financial stability for Lurie Children’s.
Clearway Health president Nicole Faucher said: “Our collaboration will provide a comprehensive new service line in outpatient pharmacy, yielding specialised care that is both personalised and effective for children facing complex health challenges.”
