The liver makes bile, 1 to 1½ quarts in a day. The liver is a network of channels (biliary channels) that deliver the bile to one large tube (the common bile duct). The gallbladder is attached to the common bile duct and acts as a storage reservoir for bile. Eating fat or protein triggers the gallbladder to contract itself until empty and stored bile finishes its trip down the common bile duct to the intestine.

For many people, the biliary tubing can be obstructed by gallstones that are forming. When the gallbladder is scanned, often nothing is seen. Typically stones are not in the gallbladder, but can be found in the channels. In addition, most are too small and not calcified a prerequisite for visibility by ultrasound.
